Franklins magic circle of circles
Magic circle of circles. Figure derived by Benjamin Franklin containing the numbers 12 to 75 inclusive on a set of concentric circular spaces across eight radii. The numbers are so arranged that the total within each concentric circle plus the 12 at the centre equals 360, the numbers on each radius plus the central 12 total 360, and any four numbers on adjoining radii (as if the corners of a square) plus half the central 12 total 180. There are also four sets each of five circular spaces set eccentrically - the numbers in any of these circular spaces plus the central 12 total 360. This figure was printed in the Gentlemans Magazine in 1768

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Benjamin Franklin's remarkable creation, known as "Franklin's Magic Circle of Circles". Created in the 18th century, this intricate illustration features a mesmerizing arrangement of concentric circular spaces across eight radii. The numbers from 12 to 75 are meticulously placed within these circles, resulting in fascinating mathematical patterns. What makes this figure truly magical is its numerical harmony. Each concentric circle, along with the central number 12, adds up to a perfect sum of 360. Similarly, the numbers on each radius combined with the central 12 also total to an astonishing 360. Even more intriguingly, any four numbers positioned on adjoining radii (forming corners like a square) plus half of the central 12 equal precisely 180. As you explore this engraving captured beautifully by Todd-White Art Photography, you'll notice four sets of eccentrically arranged circular spaces surrounding the center. In each set, when added to the central number 12, they too result in an enchanting sum of exactly 360. This masterpiece not only showcases Franklin's genius but also serves as a testament to his passion for mathematics and puzzles. Its nested circles and carefully calculated placements offer both visual delight and intellectual stimulation. Immerse yourself in this extraordinary fusion of art and science as you admire every detail within this monochromatic engraving from Science Photo Library.
