Fungus on a fly

Fungus on fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an entomogenous fungus, Empusa muscae erupting from the abdomen of a housefly (Musca domestica). When this fungus infects a host it will affect the insects behaviour before killing it. Infected flies will climb to high places, such as to the tip of grass stems, and die. The flies will then be eaten by herbivores, which then spread the spores of the fungus in their dung, which attracts flies. Magnification: x89 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate and deadly relationship between a fungus and its unsuspecting host, a housefly. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the entomogenous fungus, Empusa muscae, erupting from the abdomen of the fly with astonishing detail. When infected by this particular fungus, flies experience a disturbing alteration in their behavior before succumbing to their fate. Afflicted insects are compelled to climb to great heights, seeking refuge on grass stems or other elevated surfaces. Eventually, they meet their demise as the fungus takes over their bodies completely. The significance of this macabre phenomenon lies in how it perpetuates itself through nature's complex web. Once dead, these infected flies become an enticing meal for herbivores who unknowingly consume them along with the fungal spores present in their remains. As these herbivores excrete dung enriched with spores, it becomes an irresistible attraction for more flies. At 5x7cm size and magnified at x89, this SEM image showcases both the beauty and horror that can be found within nature's microscopic realm. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly insignificant organisms can wield immense power and influence within ecosystems. This extraordinary photograph is part of Science Photo Library's collection dedicated to showcasing awe-inspiring images from various scientific disciplines such as mycology and entomology.
