George Downing Liveing, British chemist
George Downing Liveing (1827-1924), British chemist. Liveing studied at St Johns College, at the University of Cambridge. He went on to become a Fellow of the College and later its President (1911). He was Professor of Chemistry at the University from 1861 to 1908. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1879, his speciality was spectroscopy and he was awarded the Royal Societys Davy Medal (1901) for this work. This photogravure, with his signature at lower right, shows him aged around 70. The photogravure is from the Glasgow company Annan and Sons, and is of a painting by the Scottish artist Sir George Reid (1841-1913)

This print showcases George Downing Liveing, a prominent British chemist who made significant contributions to the field of spectroscopy. Born in 1827, Liveing studied at St Johns College, University of Cambridge before becoming a Fellow and eventually the President of the College in 1911.
