In 1956 he moved to the USA to work as a financial broker. In 1970 he set up his own investment company. His 2011 estimated net worth is 14.5 billion US dollars. He has been a supporter of liberal political movements around the world since the 1970s, notably in apartheid South Africa, Eastern Europe and in opposing Republican politics in the USA.
