Glacier edge
Glacier edge. Edge of Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica. The glacier is at right, with sea ice at left. The front of the glacier measures over 20 metres tall. This is the calving front of the glacier. As a glacier arrives at the coast it becomes less stable, cracks develop and the glacier weakens. This can result in huge chunks of ice falling into the sea (calving), forming icebergs. Photographed in the 2005/2006 summer season
