GPS receiver for measuring glacier flow rates

Glacier speed measurement. Trimble 4000 SSE Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver used to measure the flow rate of glaciers in Antarctica. The receiver calculates the users position by measuring the time it takes for signals to arrive from GPS satellites at different points in the sky. By combining readings the receivers position may be fixed to within a few centimetres. The speed of the ice flow in the glacier is revealed by compiling such measurements over a period of time. The receiving antenna is on a tripod, whilst the instrumentation is stored in the yellow carrying case. Photographed at the British Antarctic Surveys Rothera Station

Antarctic Research Antarctica Environmental Glacier Glaciology Global Positioning Gps Receiver

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a crucial tool in glaciology research - a GPS receiver used to measure the flow rates of glaciers in Antarctica. The Trimble 4000 SSE Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, featured prominently in the image, plays a pivotal role in determining the position and speed of glacier movement. The receiver operates by calculating the user's precise location through measuring signal arrival times from GPS satellites positioned across the sky. By combining multiple readings, this advanced technology can fix its position within mere centimeters accuracy. This level of precision enables scientists to monitor and analyze changes in glacier flow over time. In this photograph taken at the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera Station, we see the receiving antenna mounted on a sturdy tripod while all necessary instrumentation is safely stored inside a vibrant yellow carrying case. The serene backdrop of icy landscapes further emphasizes the importance of environmental research conducted here. Glacier speed measurement holds significant implications for understanding climate change and its impact on our planet. Through compiling extensive data gathered by instruments like this GPS receiver, researchers gain valuable insights into how these massive ice formations respond to shifting conditions over extended periods. This remarkable image captures both scientific ingenuity and nature's grandeur as they converge at one of Earth's most remote locations – Antarctica.
