Guido Tonelli, CERN physicist
Guido Tonelli, CERN physicist. Guido Tonelli (born 1950) is an Italian physicist who is one of the leaders of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) project. The CMS is one of the two main detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Experiments using the CMS to discover the Higgs boson led to the announcement of the discovery of a Higgs-like particle in 2012. Tonelli and other CERN physicists have received awards in recognition of this work, including the Fundamental Physics Prize in 2012. The same year, Tonelli was also made a Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Photographed in 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Guido Tonelli, an esteemed physicist at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. With his piercing gaze and confident demeanor, Tonelli epitomizes the brilliance and dedication of a scientific leader. Born in 1950 in Italy, Tonelli played a pivotal role as one of the leaders of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) project. The CMS is a crucial component of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), one of the world's most powerful particle accelerators. It was through experiments conducted with this remarkable technology that scientists were able to announce the discovery of a Higgs-like particle in 2012. Tonelli's groundbreaking work on discovering the Higgs boson earned him prestigious accolades such as the Fundamental Physics Prize in 2012. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to science, he was also honored as a Commendatore of the Order of Merit by Italy. In this photograph taken in 2012, we witness Tonelli immersed in his office environment at CERN. Surrounded by cutting-edge equipment and scientific literature, he exudes an air of intellectual curiosity and determination. This image not only showcases Tonelli's significant achievements but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel nature's mysteries through technological advancements and collaborative research efforts at institutions like CERN.
