EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in aviation history. Taken on 4 June 1910, the day before the Budapest Air Show, it showcases the Hanriot monoplane soaring low over a field of startled horses and their handlers in Hungary. What makes this image even more remarkable is that it was piloted by none other than Marcel Hanriot, a mere 15-year-old at the time. The monoplane itself was designed and built by Marcel's father, Rene Hanriot, who founded the renowned Hanriot aircraft company in 1907. This French airplane manufacturer produced various innovative designs until its merger with Farman in 1936. The photograph not only highlights the technological advancements of early flight but also emphasizes the strong bond between father and son. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness both awe-inspiring progress and natural trepidation as these magnificent creatures react to the buzzing marvel above them. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity pushing boundaries while coexisting with nature. Preserved by Library of Congress from Bain News Service, one of America's earliest news picture libraries, this historical gem offers us a glimpse into European aviation during the early 20th century. It symbolizes courage, ambition, and familial legacy within an ever-evolving world driven by innovation.
