Healthy spine, artwork
Spine. Computer artwork of a healthy spinal cord and vertebral column. Running through the spine is the spinal cord (grey), a bundle of nerves that link the brain to the rest of the body. It is composed of grey (dark grey) and white (light grey) matter and has spinal nerves (green) branching from it. The spine is a column of cylindrical bones called vertebrae that support the trunk and head and protect the spinal cord. Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs (purple) that allow a degree of flexibility and cushion the vertebrae during movement. Each vertebra has bony projections which provide attachment sites for the muscles and ligaments that hold the spine together
