Helen Sharman, British astronaut. Helen Sharman was the first Briton to go into space. She was selected for the mission by Project Juno, a private British space programme, out of 13, 000 applicants. After 18 months of intense space training, Sharman was launched aboard Soyuz TM-12 on 18 May 1991 towards the Mir space station. She carried out agricultural and medical tests while living in the space station, before returning to Earth aboard Soyuz TM-11 on 26 May 1991
