This print captures the remarkable Hermann von Wissmann, a prominent German explorer and colonial administrator of the 19th century. Known for his extensive travels throughout Africa, Wissmann's legacy is one of adventure, power, and controversy. Having embarked on an expedition to the Congo Basin alongside fellow explorer Paul Pogge in 1880, tragedy struck when Pogge lost his life during their journey. His iron-fisted approach earned him both admiration and criticism from different quarters. By 1895, Wissmann ascended to become Governor of German East Africa, solidifying his position as a key figure in African colonial history. This engraving from circa 1888 showcases his stern countenance as he gazes directly at the camera—a testament to his unwavering determination and authority.
