EDITORS COMMENTS
This 1883 engraving showcases the remarkable Hermann von Wissmann, a prominent German explorer, officer, and colonial administrator. Known for his extensive travels in Africa, Wissmann embarked on an expedition to the Congo Basin alongside fellow explorer Paul Pogge from 1880 to 1884. Tragically, Pogge lost his life during this journey. However, Wissmann's exploratory spirit did not wane. He was subsequently employed by the Belgians during the establishment of the Congo Free State. In 1889, he received a prestigious appointment as imperial commissioner for German East Africa. It was in this role that he ruthlessly suppressed the Abushiri Revolt—an uprising against German colonial rule. Wissmann's influence continued to grow as he assumed the position of Governor of German East Africa in 1895. His tenure witnessed significant developments and transformations within this region. Captured in monochrome elegance against a white background, this engraving immortalizes Wissmann's determined gaze and resolute demeanor—a testament to his unwavering dedication to exploration and administration. As we delve into history through this artwork, it is impossible not to acknowledge Hermann von Wissmann's pivotal contributions as an explorer and colonialist during the late 19th century African landscape—his legacy forever etched into our understanding of Germany's involvement in shaping Africa's destiny.
