German WWII ramjet bomber in flight

German WWII ramjet bomber in flight. This is a Dornier Do 217 heavy bomber with a ramjet propulsor mounted on top of its fuselage. This and similar designs were developed during World War II by the Austrian-German aerospace engineer Eugen Sanger (1905-1964) and the German engineer Irene Bredt (1911-1983). Their work on jet propulsion and ramjet engines was intended to enable German bombers to reach the USA. The project was known as the Amerika Bomber, and was later named the Sanger-Bredt Antipodal Bomber. Testing involving the Dornier Do 217 took place in April 1942. None of the designs ever saw action before the end of the war

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of German engineering during World War II. The image captures the awe-inspiring sight of a Dornier Do 217 heavy bomber equipped with a ramjet propulsor soaring through the sky. This pioneering design was part of the ambitious Amerika Bomber project, conceived by Austrian-German aerospace engineer Eugen Sanger and German engineer Irene Bredt. Their groundbreaking work on jet propulsion and ramjet engines aimed to extend the range of German bombers, enabling them to reach distant targets like the United States. In April 1942, testing involving the Dornier Do 217 took place, marking an important milestone in aviation history. Although none of these innovative designs ever saw action before the end of World War II, they represent a significant chapter in technological advancements and military strategy. This monochromatic snapshot offers us a glimpse into this secretive world where cutting-edge research merged with historical warfare. The photograph not only highlights Germany's pursuit of advanced aerial capabilities but also pays tribute to the brilliant minds behind it all - Eugen Sanger and Irene Bredt. Their vision paved the way for future developments in rocketry and jet engine technology that would shape aviation for decades to come. As we delve into this historical artifact captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how human ingenuity can push boundaries even amidst times of conflict.
