Holtz machine, steroegraphic images C014 / 0530

Holtz machine. Steroegraphic images showing a Holtz electrostatic influence machine emitting sparks (top). This device was an electrostatic induction generator that converted mechanical work into electrostatic energy, and only needed an initial charge to begin operation. It was invented by German physicist Wilhelm Holtz (1836-1913) in 1865, and was the first really powerful such device to be developed. Stereographic images are designed to be combined to produce a 3D view. Photographed in 1876 by Charles Francis Himes (1838-1918). This Holtz machine was presented to Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned print showcases the Holtz machine, a remarkable invention from the 19th century. The stereographic images beautifully capture the Holtz electrostatic influence machine emitting sparks at its peak performance. This device, invented by German physicist Wilhelm Holtz in 1865, was a groundbreaking electrostatic induction generator that converted mechanical work into electrostatic energy. What made it truly revolutionary was its ability to operate with just an initial charge. Photographed in 1876 by Charles Francis Himes, this particular Holtz machine holds historical significance as it was presented to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA. It stands as a testament to both European and American ingenuity and technological advancements of the time. The monochrome image transports us back to a classroom or laboratory setting where students would have marveled at this cutting-edge apparatus. The sparks emitted by the machine create an aura of excitement and wonderment surrounding electricity and physics. Stereographs like these were specifically designed to be combined for a three-dimensional viewing experience, adding another layer of depth to our understanding of this incredible invention. As we gaze upon this photograph from over a century ago, we are reminded of how far technology has come while appreciating the foundations laid by pioneers such as Wilhelm Holtz. This print is part of the Charles F Himes Collection within the Library of Congress/Science Photo Library's Marian Carson Collection—an invaluable resource for exploring scientific history through visual documentation.
