Hybodus shark, artwork

Hybodus shark, artwork. This genus of prehistoric shark existed during the late Jurassic period (165-150 million years ago). Adult sharks measured up to 2.5 metres long and weighed up to 300 kilograms. The dorsal fin was spiny, probably as a means of defence. It had two types of teeth, one set was sharp, suitable for catching slippery prey such as fish and squid. Another set were flat and more suited for crushing the casings of shelled animals. Shark skeletons are made of cartilage and do not fossilise well. The only parts that fossilise are teeth and parts of the fins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Hybodus shark, an ancient species that roamed the oceans during the late Jurassic period, approximately 165-150 million years ago. The artwork beautifully captures the essence of this prehistoric creature, which could grow up to 2.5 meters in length and weigh a staggering 300 kilograms. One striking feature of the Hybodus shark is its spiny dorsal fin, believed to have served as a form of defense against potential predators. This remarkable adaptation adds to its allure and uniqueness among other extinct sharks. Additionally, this species possessed two distinct types of teeth: one set designed for capturing slippery prey like fish and squid with their sharp points, while another set was flat and ideal for crushing shelled animals. While most parts of shark skeletons are made from cartilage and do not fossilize well over time, teeth and certain sections of fins can withstand the test of time. This allows scientists to study these remnants today and gain insights into the biology and behavior of these fascinating creatures. The intricate illustration presented in this print transports us back to a bygone era when these magnificent creatures ruled the seas. It serves as a reminder of our planet's rich history and evolution through millions of years. Whether you're passionate about nature or simply intrigued by paleontology, this artwork is sure to captivate your imagination with its depiction of an early ancestor in our oceanic lineage - the Hybodus shark.
