In this monochrome image taken in 1929, we see a young and determined Kurchatov engrossed in his studies at his desk in St Petersburg, Russia. Kurchatov's brilliance and dedication to his craft are evident as he delves into the realm of physics. Little did anyone know at that time that he would go on to supervise the construction of the world's largest cyclotron particle accelerator during the 1930s. This achievement was just a precursor to what lay ahead for him. The photograph also serves as a reminder of Kurchatov's pivotal role in leading groundbreaking projects for the Soviet Union. He spearheaded efforts that resulted in monumental milestones such as developing their first atomic bomb in 1949, followed by their hydrogen bomb four years later. Additionally, Kurchatov played an instrumental part in establishing the world's first nuclear power plant in 1954. Beyond his scientific contributions, Kurchatov also held political influence as a member of the legislative body of the USSR from 1949 onwards. His legacy is one that intertwines both scientific prowess and political acumen. As we gaze upon this historic portrait, we are reminded not only of Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov's remarkable achievements but also his lasting impact on shaping our understanding and harnessing nuclear energy for peaceful
