ISS light trail and constellations

ISS light trail and constellations, time-exposure image. This streak of light was formed as the International Space Station (ISS) passed from left to right across the night sky, through the constellations Cynus (left) and Lyra (right), both labelled. The exposure time was 20 seconds. The ISS orbits the Earth at a height of around 360 kilometres. It can be seen in the night sky with the naked eye, and takes 92 minutes to orbit the Earth. The ISS has been crewed since October 2000. It is still being constructed, and is scheduled for completion in 2010. This image was taken on 4 September 2005, as the ISS passed over Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking time-exposure image captures the mesmerizing beauty of the International Space Station (ISS) as it streaks across the night sky, leaving behind a luminous trail. The ISS, orbiting at an altitude of approximately 360 kilometers above Earth, is a remarkable feat of human engineering and international collaboration. In this photograph taken on September 4th, 2005 over Germany, the ISS gracefully traverses through two prominent constellations: Cygnus on the left and Lyra on the right. These celestial formations are thoughtfully labeled to enhance our appreciation for their presence in this cosmic dance. The exposure time of 20 seconds allows us to witness the full extent of the ISS's journey across these starry backdrops. With its completion scheduled for 2010, this image serves as a testament to humanity's ongoing efforts in constructing and maintaining this extraordinary space station since October 2000. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring sight, it is important to remember that despite its immense size and technological sophistication, the ISS can be observed with just our naked eyes from Earth's surface. Every 92 minutes, it completes an orbit around our planet—a symbol of mankind's continuous exploration beyond our terrestrial boundaries. This print by Science Photo Library invites us to marvel at both scientific achievement and natural wonders intertwined in one frame—an emblematic representation of humanity's quest for knowledge among distant stars.
