Lamp research

Lamp research. Researcher using an Ulbricht, or integrating, sphere to study the light from an Endura fluorescent lamp. Once closed, the spheres reflective inner surface allows the intensity of the lamp to be found using a sensor. Fluorescent lamps are more efficient than filament light bulbs, and the Endura lamp lasts for 100, 000 hours. The electric current passing through the mercury vapour in the tube causes the gas to emit ultraviolet radiation. This is re-emitted as visible light by the phosphors on the inside of the tube. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a researcher at the Siemens Osram Sylvania Laboratory in Beverly, Massachusetts, delving into the depths of lamp research. With an air of focused determination, the scientist utilizes an Ulbricht sphere to study the light emitted by an Endura fluorescent lamp. The Ulbricht sphere, also known as an integrating sphere, plays a crucial role in this investigation. As it is closed shut, its inner surface reflects and measures the intensity of the lamp's radiance through a sensor. This innovative technique allows for precise analysis and evaluation of fluorescent lamps' efficiency compared to traditional filament bulbs. Endura fluorescent lamps are renowned for their exceptional longevity, boasting an impressive lifespan of 100,000 hours. The secret behind their luminosity lies within mercury vapor contained within the tube. When electric current passes through this gas-filled chamber, it emits ultraviolet radiation that is then transformed into visible light by phosphors coating the tube's interior. In this image captured by Science Photo Library, we witness not only cutting-edge technology but also a testament to human ingenuity and progress in electrical engineering and physics. It serves as a reminder that continuous exploration and research pave the way towards more sustainable energy solutions for our ever-evolving world.
