Lancets with cases, circa 1790 -1830 C017 / 3578

Two lancets with their cases. The smaller lancet (left) dates from around 1790 and the larger (right), from around 1830. Both lancets are English and made from steel (blade) and tortoiseshell (handle). Their cases are made from leather. Lancets are double edged surgical blades with a pointed end. These instruments were used to open patients veins for bloodletting. This was a common practice in medicine until the late nineteenth century and was believed to treat a range of ailments by removing surplus bodily humours (fluids within the body)

This print showcases two lancets with their cases, providing a glimpse into the medical practices of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The lancets, originating from England, are crafted meticulously using steel for the blade and tortoiseshell for the handle. Their elegant leather cases add to their historical charm. Lancets were essential surgical instruments used during bloodletting procedures, a widely accepted medical practice until the late 1800s.
