Larrey, Dominique Jean, Baron
Baron Jean Dominique Larrey (1766-1842), French surgeon and inventor of the ambulance. Larrey was surgeon-in-chief of the Napleonic armies from 1797 to 1815. Larrey believed in early limb amputation for serious wounds and used refrigeration to dull the pain of such operations. He introduced flying ambulances to the battlefield. These light, two-wheeled, sprung carriages removed the wounded to the rear for surgery. Larrey became Inspector General of the French Army in 1805. After Napoleons fall in 1815, Larrey wrote a pioneering textbook on military surgery. Here he is shown in 1792 demonstrating that galvanic current induced muscular contraction in a leg he had amputated from a young soldier

Ambulance Inventor Surgeon Larrey Muscular Contraction Triage
EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the remarkable figure of Baron Jean Dominique Larrey, a French surgeon and inventor who revolutionized battlefield medicine during the Napoleonic era. In this image from 1792, Larrey is seen demonstrating his groundbreaking discovery that galvanic current could induce muscular contraction in an amputated leg. Baron Larrey's contributions to medical science were truly pioneering. As surgeon-in-chief of the Napoleonic armies from 1797 to 1815, he introduced innovative practices that saved countless lives on the frontlines. He firmly believed in early limb amputation for serious wounds, a controversial approach at the time but one that proved highly effective in preventing infection and further complications. Larrey's most notable invention was undoubtedly the ambulance. Recognizing the need for swift transportation of wounded soldiers, he designed lightweight two-wheeled carriages equipped with springs to safely transport casualties away from battlefields for urgent surgical intervention. These flying ambulances became a game-changer in military medicine and set new standards for triage and emergency care. In addition to his practical innovations, Baron Jean Dominique Larrey also served as Inspector General of the French Army and authored a seminal textbook on military surgery after Napoleon's fall in 1815. This mesmerizing print immortalizes Larrey's legacy as an inventive genius whose unwavering dedication to saving lives forever transformed battlefield medicine.
