This print showcases a remarkable artifact from the 19th century - a Creamware leeches jar with exquisite gilt decoration. Crafted around 1800 in Staffordshire, England, this jar is an example of the refined earthenware known as creamware, distinguished by its creamy glaze. During this era, bloodletting was a prevalent medical practice used to treat various ailments by removing excess bodily fluids or humours. It represents an era when English potters mastered their artistry and created vessels like these for medicinal purposes. Against a rich brown background that adds depth and warmth to the image, we are transported back to an age where such jars were essential tools for doctors and apothecaries alike. This antique piece serves as both a testament to our medical history and as a reminder of how far we have come in understanding human health.
