Lord Kelvin, British physicist

Lord Kelvin (1824-1907), British physicist and mathematician. Born William Thomson, he was co-discover in 1852 of the Joule-Thomson effect. In 1848, he proposed the existence of absolute zero and the use of an absolute temperature scale, which was named the Kelvin scale. In 1866 he was knighted for his work on galvanometers and signal-carrying cables used on the newly-laid Atlantic cable. He was made Baron Kelvin in 1892. He was President of the Royal Society and also appointed to the Order of Merit. Artwork from the 18th volume (second period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Lord Kelvin, a brilliant British physicist and mathematician whose contributions to science are immeasurable. Born as William Thomson in 1824, he made groundbreaking discoveries throughout his illustrious career. In 1852, he co-discovered the Joule-Thomson effect, which revolutionized our understanding of thermodynamics. Four years prior, in 1848, Lord Kelvin proposed the concept of absolute zero and introduced the Kelvin scale for measuring temperature. Renowned for his expertise in galvanometers and signal-carrying cables used on transatlantic communication lines, Lord Kelvin was knighted in 1866 for his exceptional work. His remarkable achievements led him to be elevated to Baron Kelvin in 1892 and appointed President of the Royal Society. Additionally, he received prestigious honors such as being appointed to the Order of Merit. The artwork featured here is from an edition of La Science Illustree published in 1896. This monochrome illustration captures Lord Kelvin's distinguished appearance with its head-and-shoulders composition. The image exudes a sense of historical significance and pays homage to this influential figure who left an indelible mark on physics and mathematics. As we delve into this snapshot from history, we are reminded of Lord Kelvin's immense intellect and enduring legacy that continues to shape scientific progress today.
