Moons surface. Craters on the surface of the Moon, as photographed by the Soviet lunar probe Zond 7 on 11 August 1969. Zond 7 was an unmanned Soviet spacecraft that launched on 7 August 1969. These photographs were obtained at the point of closest approach, just under 2000 kilometres from the lunar surface. The spacecraft continued along its elongated orbit around the Earth, returning to Earth and landing safely on 14 August 1969
