Mouldy lemon

Mouldy lemon. Penicillium sp. fungus growing on a lemon (Citrus limon). The fungus has spread over the surface of the fruit, producing a network (mycelium, white) of fine filaments (hyphae). It has also produced spores (green/grey), which may spread to infect other fruit. The fungus penetrates downwards into the fruit, digesting and absorbing nutrients. Most or all of the fruit will have decayed within a few days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the fascinating yet unsettling sight of a mouldy lemon. The lemon, belonging to the Citrus limon species, has fallen victim to the relentless growth of Penicillium sp. fungus. This invasive fungus has spread its mycelium, creating an intricate network of delicate white filaments that cover the surface of the fruit. As if claiming its territory wasn't enough, this tenacious fungus has also produced spores in shades of green and grey. These tiny reproductive structures have the potential to infect other unsuspecting fruits nearby, perpetuating their decayed fate. The destructive nature of this fungal invasion becomes evident as we observe how it penetrates deep into the lemon's flesh, digesting and absorbing vital nutrients along its path. Within a matter of days, most or all parts of this once vibrant fruit will succumb to complete decay. This image serves as a reminder of nature's ability to both create and destroy life forms. It showcases not only the beauty found within scientific exploration but also highlights how even seemingly insignificant organisms can play significant roles in ecological processes. While visually intriguing from an artistic standpoint, it also raises awareness about food spoilage caused by fungi like Penicillium sp. , rendering our beloved citrus fruits inedible and reminding us to appreciate their freshness before they fall prey to such rotting forces.
