This print captures the historic Nansens Fram expedition of the 19th century, led by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen. The image showcases the formidable ship, Fram, positioned at the top left corner. Embarking on their Arctic journey on 22 September 1893, Nansen and his courageous crew ventured into the treacherous ice pack as depicted by the prominent black line in the center. Their arduous march northward resulted in an extraordinary achievement – reaching a record-breaking latitude of 86 degrees and 14 minutes on 7 April 1895. After enduring numerous challenges during their epic retreat southwards, Nansen and his team finally boarded another vessel named Windward on 6 August 1895. This marked their triumphant return to Vardo, Norway on13 August 1896. Published within La Science Illustree's eighteenth volume of its second period in late nineteenth-century France, this historical illustration serves as a testament to human determination and resilience amidst harsh polar conditions. The monochrome artwork beautifully depicts both geographical details and route markings that trace their remarkable journey through uncharted territories.
