Nuclear fuel production, Russia
Nuclear fuel production at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Works, Russia. This is an area where the nuclear fuel pellets are produced using the equipment seen here. Workers can handle the highly radioactive material at various stages, but do so behind lead shielding. One handling area is seen at the top of the gantry. The nuclear fuel pellets will later be loaded into fuel rods to be used in a nuclear reactor to create a controlled nuclear reaction and generate electricity. Nuclear fuels are radioactive isotopes of either uranium or plutonium. In this case, the material being used is uranium dioxide. Novosibirsk is in southern Siberia, near Russias border with Central Asia. Photographed in 2006
