Optical disc
Optical disc. Compact discs (CDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs) are examples of optical discs. An optical disc digitally stores music and other data as tiny depressions in a plastic disc. This disc is coated with a fine film of metal and then by another layer of plastic. The depressions form a spiral track moving from the centre of the disc to the outer edge. The data track is about 0.5 micrometres wide, and would stretch out for nearly 5 kilometres if unravelled. The information is read by a laser light that reflects from the metal layer, allowing the original data to be reconstructed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty and technological marvel of an optical disc. The image captures a rainbow-like spectrum reflecting off the surface of the disc, creating a mesmerizing display of colors. Optical discs, such as CDs and DVDs, have revolutionized data storage by digitally encoding information in tiny depressions etched into a plastic disc. This particular disc is coated with a thin layer of metal and protected by another layer of plastic, ensuring its durability. The spiral track on the disc moves from its center to the outer edge, containing data that stretches for nearly 5 kilometers if unraveled. To retrieve this information, a laser light is used to read the reflections from the metal layer. This process allows for accurate reconstruction of the original data stored on the disc. The visual representation captured in this photograph symbolizes communication and technology at its finest. The sparkling reflection represents not only our ability to store vast amounts of audio and visual content but also our continuous quest for innovation in data storage mediums. As we admire this stunning image, let us appreciate how optical discs have transformed our lives by enabling easy access to music, movies, and other forms of digital media while preserving their quality over time.
