Oriental small-clawed otters

Oriental small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinerea) resting after swimming. This otter, also known as the Asian small-clawed otter, is the smallest otter species in the world. It is found in parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as in southern India and China. Its name refers to its tiny claws, which do not protrude beyond the ends of its finger pads. This gives its paws increased sensitivity, allowing them to feel under mud and rocks to locate the mussels, snails and crustaceans they eat. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a group of Oriental small-clawed otters gracefully resting after an invigorating swim. These adorable creatures, scientifically known as Aonyx cinerea, hold the title for being the smallest otter species in existence. Their natural habitat spans across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, southern India, and China. What sets these charming otters apart is their minuscule claws that remain hidden within their finger pads. This unique adaptation enhances their tactile sensitivity and enables them to explore beneath mud and rocks with ease. It is through this heightened sense of touch that they locate and feast upon a diet consisting of mussels, snails, and crustaceans. The photograph beautifully captures these Asian gems against a picturesque shoreline backdrop. The image not only highlights their playful nature but also offers insight into their biological characteristics. Classified as mammals belonging to the family Mustelidae, these otters are part of Israel's diverse fauna. Taken in 2008 by Science Photo Library in Israel's Middle East region, this remarkable shot illustrates the beauty of wildlife thriving even in captivity settings such as zoos. With its focus on one particular creature perched comfortably on a branch amidst its companionship with other members of its species nearby; it serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect and appreciate Earth's incredible biodiversity.
