Pavel Belyayev, Soviet cosmonaut
Pavel Ivanovich Belyayev (1925-70), Russian-Soviet cosmonaut. A talented pilot and renowned leader, Belyayev was an easy selection for cosmonaut training. His one mission was Voskhod-2 of 18-19 March 1965. During the mission his fellow cosmonaut, Alexei Leonov, became the first man to perform a space walk. During re-entry, the capsules automated systems failed, so Belyayev had to perform the first ever manual re-entry procedure. He never flew into space again, and died in 1970 from peritonitis following an operation for a stomach ulcer. Photographed in 1965

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Soviet cosmonaut, Pavel Belyayev, during his pioneering years in space exploration. Pavel Ivanovich Belyayev (1925-70) was an esteemed Russian-Soviet pilot and leader who effortlessly earned his place in cosmonaut training. His notable mission was Voskhod-2, which took place on 18-19 March 1965. It was during this historic flight that his fellow cosmonaut, Alexei Leonov, achieved the groundbreaking feat of becoming the first man to perform a spacewalk. However, adversity struck during re-entry when the capsule's automated systems malfunctioned. In a display of extraordinary skill and composure, Belyayev executed the world's first manual re-entry procedure with precision and courage. Despite this incredible achievement, he never had another opportunity to venture into space again. Tragically, Pavel Belyayev passed away in 1970 due to peritonitis following an operation for a stomach ulcer. This photograph immortalizes him at the height of his career in 1965—a moment frozen in time where he stands tall donning his iconic spacesuit and helmet. As we gaze upon this portrait of determination and bravery against the backdrop of Russia's rich history in space exploration throughout the twentieth century, we are reminded of Belyayev's invaluable contributions to humanity's quest for knowledge beyond our earthly boundaries.
