Perspective and Anamorphosis Diagrams C017 / 3451

Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing illustrations of anamorphosis and perspective. Perspective in the graphic arts is an approximate representation, on a flat surface (such as paper), of an image as it is seen by the eye. The two most characteristic features of perspective are that objects are drawn: Smaller as their distance from the observer increases, and, Foreshortened: the size of an objects dimensions along the line of sight are relatively shorter than dimensions across the line of sight. Anamorphosis is a distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices or occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image. The word anamorphosis" is derived from the Greek prefix ana-, meaning back or again, and the word morphe, meaning shape or form."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Perspective and Anamorphosis Diagrams C017 / 3451" takes us back to the 18th century, where illustrations of anamorphosis and perspective were showcased in encyclopedias. The graphic arts played a crucial role in representing images as seen by the human eye on a two-dimensional surface. The essence of perspective lies in its ability to depict objects smaller as they recede into the distance, while also foreshortening their dimensions along the line of sight. This technique creates a sense of depth and realism within artistic creations. On the other hand, anamorphosis introduces distortion, requiring viewers to adopt specific vantage points or employ special devices to reconstruct the intended image. Derived from Greek roots, "anamorphosis" combines "ana-" meaning back or again with "morphe" meaning shape or form. It is through this unique projection that artists challenge our perception and invite us to engage actively with their work. In this particular photograph, we see a man engrossed in studying these intricate diagrams. His focused gaze reflects his deep appreciation for both geometry and artistry. Through his eyes, we are reminded of how vision plays an integral role in comprehending these complex concepts. Thanks to Science Photo Library's dedication to preserving historical knowledge through visual representation, we can now admire this remarkable piece that intertwines ancient Greek wisdom with modern graphic arts techniques.
