Photozootrope. 19th-century artwork of a device called a photozootrope built by French inventor Henri Joly (1866-1945). This was an early motion picture projector, based on the same principles as Edisons Kinetoscope. Edisons invention only had one viewer, whereas Jolys device had four (across centre). Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing an extraordinary invention known as the photozootrope. Crafted by French inventor Henri Joly, this technological marvel was a precursor to motion picture projectors like Edison's Kinetoscope. However, unlike its predecessor that catered to only one viewer at a time, Joly's device boasted four viewing stations arranged across its center. The intricate illustration featured in this artwork is sourced from the first volume of "La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle" a renowned publication by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton. It offers us a glimpse into the early days of cinematography when pioneers were pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities. With its historical significance and European origins, this image transports us to an era where optical wonders fascinated audiences. The photozootrope itself stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of technological advancements. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece, let us appreciate not only the brilliance behind Joly's creation but also the artistic prowess displayed by Breton in capturing its essence. This artwork serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of cinematic innovation while honoring those who paved the way for our modern-day film industry.
