Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. At 307 metres, this aqueduct is the longest and highest cast-iron aqueduct in the world. It carries the Llangollen canal 38 metres above the River Dee. It was designed by Thomas Telford and constructed between 1795 and 1805. The iron castings were produced at the Plaskynaston foundry and each casting dovetails into the next. The joints were made watertight using welsh flannel dipped in boiling sugar, after which the joints were sealed with lead. The aqueduct is a grade 1 listed building. It is still used for its original purpose and is crossed by more than 1000 boats each year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a true engineering marvel. Spanning an impressive 307 meters, it holds the title of being both the longest and highest cast-iron aqueduct in existence. Designed by the brilliant mind of Thomas Telford and constructed between 1795 and 1805, this architectural masterpiece carries the Llangollen canal an astonishing 38 meters above the River Dee. The intricate iron castings used in its construction were meticulously produced at Plaskynaston foundry, with each piece seamlessly fitting into the next like a perfectly crafted puzzle. To ensure watertight joints, Welsh flannel dipped in boiling sugar was ingeniously employed before sealing them with lead. As a Grade I listed building, this historic aqueduct still serves its original purpose today. More than just a relic from the past, it continues to facilitate navigation for over 1000 boats annually. The sight of barges gracefully crossing this remarkable structure against the backdrop of Froncysyllte village is truly awe-inspiring. Located in Wales' stunning River Dee Valley, this iconic bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. Its towering railings stand tall amidst breathtaking natural surroundings – an enchanting blend of man-made brilliance harmonizing with nature's beauty. This print captures not only a moment frozen in time but also pays tribute to British engineering prowess that has stood strong for centuries. It is sure to captivate any admirer of architecture or lover
