Porpoise and Fulton submarines, 1900s C016 / 2541

Porpoise and Fulton submarines. USS Porpoise (SS-7) and the submarine Fulton alongside. In the background are other submarines, with the nearer one the USS Plunger (SS-2). These Plunger-class submarines were built at Crescent Shipyard, Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. Porpoise was laid down in December 1900, launched in September 1901, and commissioned in September 1903. The Fulton was built in 1901, but not for the US Navy. It was shipped to Russia in June 1904. These early submarines carried a crew of seven, and used a petrol engine on the surface and an electric one when submerged

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1900s, offering a glimpse into the world of naval warfare and technological advancements. In this historic image, we see two remarkable submarines docked side by side in an American harbor. The larger vessel on the left is none other than USS Porpoise (SS-7), a groundbreaking submarine that was laid down in December 1900, launched in September 1901, and commissioned in September 1903. With its sleek design and advanced capabilities for its time, it symbolized the cutting-edge technology employed by the United States Navy. Beside the Porpoise stands another intriguing submarine named Fulton. Built in 1901 but not intended for service with the US Navy, this unique vessel was actually shipped to Russia in June 1904. Both submarines boasted petrol engines when operating on the surface and electric engines when submerged – a testament to their innovative engineering. In the background of this snapshot lies a collection of additional submarines, including one identified as USS Plunger (SS-2). These Plunger-class vessels were constructed at Crescent Shipyard located in Elizabeth, New Jersey. As we marvel at this monochrome scene from over a century ago, we are reminded of how far naval technology has progressed since then. This extraordinary duo represents an important chapter in maritime history – one that showcases North America's contribution to transportation innovation during the early years of submarine development.
