Quantum entanglement equipment

Quantum physicists with equipment used in a quantum entanglement experiment. Entanglement is a property of a pair of particles in which a change to one has an instantaneous effect on the other, no matter how far apart they are. Researchers at Vienna University, Austria, split entangled photon pairs and sent each photon to a separate receiver. They performed this both in fibre optic wires and through the air. Entanglement was confirmed by the detectors in both cases. It is hoped that this entanglement will find uses in cryptography, quantum computing and satellite communications. Photographed in 2003. The double exposure effect illustrates the oddness of the quantum world

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the world of quantum physics, showcasing the equipment used in a groundbreaking experiment on quantum entanglement. Taken at Vienna University in Austria back in 2003, this image showcases two dedicated researchers, a male and female scientist, surrounded by an array of sophisticated hardware and apparatus. The concept of entanglement is truly mind-boggling - it describes how a change to one particle can instantaneously affect its entangled partner, regardless of their physical distance apart. In this experiment, photon pairs were split and sent to separate receivers through both fiber optic wires and the air. The detectors confirmed that entanglement was maintained in both cases. The double exposure effect employed here adds an artistic touch while also emphasizing the peculiar nature of the quantum world. It creates ghost-like images that symbolize the mysterious connection between these particles. Scientists hope that harnessing this phenomenon will revolutionize various fields such as cryptography, quantum computing, and satellite communications. This research opens up possibilities for secure communication systems and advanced computational capabilities beyond our current understanding. In this photograph from Science Photo Library's collection, we witness not only cutting-edge technology but also the dedication and curiosity driving these physicists forward into uncharted territories within the realm of quantum mechanics.
