Refrigerated milk cart, 19th century

Refrigerated milk cart. This design, from the USA, used ice to keep the air temperature cool for the transport of milk. Holes in the compartments allowed air to circulate from where the ice compartments to the milk compartments. The design of the compartments allowed a continual flow of air (arrows) to maintain the low temperatures. Refrigeration technology, using various techniques, was mostly developed from the 1840s and 1850s, though ice had been used for centuries. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing a revolutionary invention - the refrigerated milk cart. Originating from the United States, this innovative design utilized ice to maintain cool air temperatures during the transportation of milk. The compartments of the cart were ingeniously crafted with holes that allowed for efficient air circulation between the ice compartments and the milk storage areas. This continuous flow of air, depicted by arrows in the artwork, ensured that low temperatures were maintained throughout. Refrigeration technology was rapidly evolving during this era, with various techniques being developed from as early as the 1840s and 1850s. Although ice had been used for centuries for preservation purposes, it was during this time that more sophisticated methods began to emerge. The historical significance of this image lies not only in its portrayal of an early form of refrigeration but also in its representation of advancements in logistics within industries such as dairy production and food preservation. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of finding better ways to transport perishable goods. This remarkable piece is part of a collection featured in La Science Illustree, a popular French science weekly publication dating back to 1891. Its inclusion in volume seven showcases how cutting-edge scientific discoveries captivated audiences across Europe at that time.
