Revelstoke hydroelectric dam C013 / 9760
Revelstoke hydroelectric dam. Revelstoke Dam and its hydroelectric power station was completed in 1984. It is located on the Columbia River, near Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada. The dam is 175 metres tall, creating Lake Revelstoke. Water from this lake is passed through turbines to generate electricity, with each turbine having a capacity of around 500 megawatts (MW). Here, four turbines are seen (centre), with capacity for another two (right). One of these spare turbine slots was made into a fifth generating unit in 2010, bringing the total capacity to 2480 MW. The site is operated by BC Hydro

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive Revelstoke hydroelectric dam, a remarkable feat of engineering located on the majestic Columbia River in British Columbia, Canada. Standing tall at 175 meters, this concrete structure creates the breathtaking Lake Revelstoke as it harnesses the power of water to generate electricity. In this image, we witness four turbines at the heart of the dam's hydroelectric power station. Each turbine possesses an astounding capacity of approximately 500 megawatts (MW), with room for two more turbines on the right side. In 2010, one of these vacant slots was transformed into a fifth generating unit, elevating its total capacity to a staggering 2480 MW. Operated by BC Hydro, this technological marvel not only exemplifies industrial prowess but also demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability. As water from Lake Revelstoke surges through these turbines, clean and renewable energy is produced without harming nature's delicate balance. The significance of this hydroelectric dam extends beyond its sheer size and power generation capabilities; it symbolizes human ingenuity and our ability to harmonize with nature for sustainable progress. Built in the late 20th century and completed in 1984, it stands as a testament to our ever-evolving understanding of environmental science and our dedication towards creating environmentally friendly solutions. With its grandeur against the backdrop of British Columbia's stunning landscape, this photograph encapsulates both awe-inspiring beauty and technological achievement that will continue shaping North America's energy industry well into the future.
