The sand martin, scientifically known as Riparia riparia, is an incredible creature that spends most of its time skillfully catching insects while in flight, often seen hovering over rivers and lakes. As a migratory bird, it can be found across the globe. In the old world, particularly Europe and northern Eurasia, these birds breed before embarking on their winter journey to tropical Africa and southern Asia. Similarly, in the new world, they breed in North America and migrate to South America for the winter months.
