Sea urchin and anemone

Sea urchin and anemone. Northern red anemone (Urticina felina, upper right) and pale sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus pallidus, lower left) on rocks. The northern red, or dahlia, anemone inhabits north Atlantic waters. It feeds on fish and crustaceans which are caught and stung by its tentacles. Sea urchins feed mainly on algae, but will also eat invertebrates such as mussels, sponges and brittle stars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the delicate beauty of the underwater world. In this mesmerizing image, a Northern red anemone and a pale sea urchin take center stage on rugged rocks. The vibrant colors of the anemone's tentacles contrast with the spiny texture of the sea urchin, creating a visually stunning composition. The Northern red anemone, also known as dahlia anemone, is native to North Atlantic waters. Its tentacles serve as both a means of capturing prey and providing protection from potential threats. Fish and crustaceans are lured into its grasp only to be stung by its venomous touch. In contrast, the pale sea urchin primarily feeds on algae but will not hesitate to devour other invertebrates such as mussels, sponges, and brittle stars when given the opportunity. Its spindly appearance adds another layer of intrigue to this already fascinating marine ecosystem. This photograph captures a moment frozen in time beneath the cold depths of the ocean floor. It offers us a glimpse into nature's intricate web where species coexist and rely on one another for survival. Through this lens, we can appreciate both the fragility and resilience found within our planet's diverse fauna. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with a breathtaking snapshot that reminds us of Earth's boundless wonders below its shimmering surface.
