Section through a nautilus shell

Nautilus shell. A section through the shell of a Nautilus (Nautilus sp.). The nautilus has been removed allowing the inner chambers and spiral whorls to be seen. The larger shell partitions have a knob-like structure forming the siphuncle tube. This thin internal tube (best seen top centre) is used for fluid transfer to regulate buoyancy. Because of this it is sometimes called a chamber snail. As the animal grows, new chambers are added one at a time to its shell. The Nautilus is a cephalopod mollusc resembling a squid in having many tentacles surrounding its mouth. Photographed under coloured lights

Cephalopod Mollusca Nautilus Shell Spiral Form Nautilus Shell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing section through the intricate shell of a Nautilus. The removed nautilus allows us to marvel at the inner chambers and spiral whorls, revealing the hidden beauty within. The larger partitions of the shell exhibit knob-like structures that form the siphuncle tube, responsible for regulating buoyancy by transferring fluids. This unique feature has earned it the nickname "chamber snail". As this remarkable creature grows, new chambers are added one by one to its ever-expanding shell, creating an exquisite spiral form reminiscent of nature's artistry. The Nautilus belongs to the cephalopod mollusc family and shares similarities with squids due to its numerous tentacles surrounding its mouth. Photographed under enchanting colored lights, this image captures not only scientific significance but also evokes a sense of wonder and appreciation for our diverse natural world. It serves as a reminder of how invertebrates like the Nautilus can possess such extraordinary complexity and elegance. Displayed proudly in any setting, this print from Science Photo Library invites viewers into an awe-inspiring realm where nature's secrets unfold before their eyes. Its depiction of delicate details and vibrant hues makes it perfect for enthusiasts interested in zoology, wildlife, or simply those who appreciate capturing moments that celebrate life's wonders.
