SEM of snow & ice crystals

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a pair of tiny, flower-like ice crystals. Snow & ice crystals have a characteristic hexagonal symmetry. Each crystal is made up from water molecules, arranged with 2 hydrogen atoms making an angle of 105 degrees with 1 oxygen atom. The fixed shape of the water molecule means they can assume a stable crystal arrangement only when arranged as a 6- branched figure. Despite essential hexagonal similarity no two crystals are identical because their growth is influenced by temperature, humidity, air currents etc. & these conditions are never quite the same. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size, x600 at 6x4.5cm size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © DR JEREMY BURGESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of snow and ice crystals. In this false-color scanning electron micrograph, we are presented with a pair of delicate, flower-like ice crystals. These mesmerizing structures exhibit the characteristic hexagonal symmetry that is commonly associated with snow and ice formations. Each crystal is composed of water molecules arranged in a unique pattern. The fixed shape of the water molecule allows for a stable crystal arrangement only when organized as a six-branched figure. Despite their essential hexagonal similarity, no two crystals are identical due to various environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and air currents influencing their growth. The magnified image reveals the fine details of these tiny wonders. At 35mm size, they appear at an impressive x400 magnification while reaching x600 magnification at 6x4.5cm size. This photograph not only captures the frozen beauty found in nature but also serves as a reminder of how climate and weather conditions shape our surroundings during winter months. It offers us a glimpse into the microscopic world where even something seemingly simple like an ice crystal holds remarkable complexity. Displayed by Science Photo Library, this stunning print invites us to appreciate both the scientific marvels hidden within everyday phenomena and the artistry that can be found in scientific exploration itself.
