Semang charm against stings, artwork

Semang charm against stings. Artwork of a magic charm against stings, incised on a bamboo stave by magicians of the Semang people of the Malay Peninsula. At upper centre is an Argus pheasant (brown) with depictions of its tail feather eye-marks. At left is a centipede (orange). At right are two scorpions (blue). The female is at top, with the male below. The pink areas show the amount of swelling in people stung by the scorpions, with the female the more poisonous. The charm invokes the pheasant because it feeds on centipedes and scorpions. 19th century artwork by H. Vaughan Stevens

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite artwork known as the "Semang charm against stings". Created by the skilled magicians of the Semang people from the Malay Peninsula, this bamboo stave bears a magical charm designed to protect against venomous bites and stings. At the center of this intricate illustration is an Argus pheasant, depicted in shades of brown, showcasing its mesmerizing tail feather eye-marks. To its left, an orange centipede crawls while two blue scorpions occupy the right side. The female scorpion rests on top with her male counterpart below. Interestingly, pink areas indicate the extent of swelling caused by scorpion stings, with females being more poisonous than males. The symbolism behind this enchanting charm lies in invoking the prowess of the Argus pheasant, which feeds on both centipedes and scorpions. By harnessing nature's own defense mechanisms, it aims to provide protection against these venomous creatures. Dating back to the 19th century and created by H. Vaughan Stevens, this artwork not only reflects historical significance but also highlights aspects of Malaysian fauna and wildlife. Its fusion of biology, anthropology, zoology, ornithology, entomology paints a vivid picture of cultural practices intertwined with natural elements. As we delve into this remarkable piece from East Malacca's rich history and heritage dating back to 1896 Asia; it serves as a testament to human ingenuity in finding remedies for nature's challenges through artistry and ancient wisdom passed down through generations.
