Small Magellanic Cloud

Small Magellanic Cloud. Optical image of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a satellite galaxy of our galaxy the Milky Way. SMC lies about 185, 000 light years away and has about one billion times the mass of the Sun. It has an irregular shape and is characterised by several star clusters and interstellar clouds of gas & dust (nebulae, small pink patches). Part of the SMC extends towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (not see here), another satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, possibly due to its gravitational attraction. The bright, round object at centre right is 47 Tucanae. It is a globular star cluster found in our galaxy at a distance of about 20, 000 light years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ethereal beauty of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a satellite galaxy nestled within our own Milky Way. Located approximately 185,000 light years away, this celestial wonder boasts a staggering mass equivalent to one billion times that of our Sun. Its irregular shape is adorned with numerous star clusters and nebulae, represented by delicate pink patches scattered throughout. Intriguingly, part of the SMC extends towards its neighboring satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (not visible in this image), potentially due to their gravitational attraction. At the center-right of this mesmerizing composition shines 47 Tucanae – a brilliant globular star cluster residing within our own galaxy at a distance of about 20,000 light years. As we delve into the realms of science and astronomy through this remarkable visual creation from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the vastness and complexity that exists beyond Earth's boundaries. The Small Magellanic Cloud serves as an awe-inspiring testament to the grandeur and diversity present in our galactic neighborhood.
