SMART-1 lunar spacecraft

SMART-1 lunar spacecraft heading to the Moon. This spacecraft is the first part of the European Space Agency (ESA) SMART (Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology) programme. It is the first ESA spacecraft to travel to and orbit the Moon. It is propelled by a new type of engine called an ion drive. This works by accelerating xenon ions in a magnetic field. The ion drive only provides a small amount of thrust, but it is very light and more efficient than a conventional engine. Craft powered by ion drives will be able to reach greater speeds than rocket-propelled craft, although the acceleration is slower. SMART-1 is due to arrive at the Moon in December 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the groundbreaking SMART-1 lunar spacecraft as it embarks on its historic journey towards the Moon. As part of the European Space Agency's innovative SMART program, this spacecraft represents a significant milestone in space exploration and technology research. Equipped with an extraordinary ion drive engine, SMART-1 utilizes a magnetic field to accelerate xenon ions, providing a small yet highly efficient thrust. This revolutionary propulsion system allows for greater speeds compared to conventional rocket engines, albeit with slower acceleration. The image beautifully captures the sleek design of SMART-1 against the backdrop of Earth, highlighting its solar panels that harness sunlight to power its mission. Scheduled to reach our celestial neighbor in December 2004, this pioneering spacecraft will be the first ESA vehicle to both travel to and orbit around the Moon. As we marvel at this artistic representation created by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and technological advancement. The SMART-1 lunar spacecraft symbolizes our collective ambition to explore new frontiers beyond our home planet. With its focus on advanced research and cutting-edge technology, this mission holds immense potential for unraveling mysteries about lunar resources such as water ice while paving the way for future planetary expeditions. In essence, this photograph encapsulates not only scientific progress but also human ingenuity and curiosity that continue propelling us towards uncharted territories in space exploration.
