Snapdragon seed, SEM

Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) seed, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Small seeds like this one often have very roughly textured seed coats, or testas. The ridges and craters are produced by outgrowths of the integument, or outer skin, of the ovule (egg). Their purpose is to trap small particles of soil, so that when the seed falls to the ground it is anchored and can germinate in security without being blown away. Magnification: x134 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Snapdragon seed, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The vibrant colors and detailed structure are truly mesmerizing. Small seeds like this one possess uniquely textured seed coats, or testas, which can be observed in this image. The ridges and craters on the surface are formed by outgrowths of the integument, or outer skin, of the ovule (egg). These fascinating features serve an important purpose - they act as traps for tiny particles of soil. When the seed eventually falls to the ground, it becomes firmly anchored and protected from being blown away by strong winds. With a magnification of x134 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate nature's intricate design on a whole new level. It provides insight into how plants have evolved remarkable mechanisms to ensure their survival and successful reproduction. The Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae and is known for its beautiful flowers that resemble dragon mouths. This print not only highlights its reproductive part but also serves as a reminder of our planet's rich botanical diversity. Displayed proudly by Science Photo Library, this stunning image invites us into the world of botany and encourages us to marvel at nature's wonders.
