Soap bubble film iridescence C017 / 8528

Soap bubble film iridescence. Iridescence is the property of certain surfaces to change colour depending on the angle of light refraction or reflection, or the angle of view. The colours are due to interference of light waves reflected from the upper and lower surfaces of the soap bubble film. The interference patterns appear as bands of colour, related to the thickness of the film. Thicker walls cause interference at longer (redder) wavelengths, so appear bluer and greener. As the film thins by evaporation, the reflected light cancels out yellow then green then blue light, appearing blue, magenta and golden yellow, before becoming too thin to support itself, and popping

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of soap bubble film iridescence. Iridescence, a fascinating optical phenomenon, manifests as an array of vibrant colors that change depending on the angle of light refraction or reflection and the viewer's perspective. The stunning hues are a result of interference patterns created by light waves bouncing off both upper and lower surfaces of the soap bubble film. The thickness of the film plays a crucial role in determining its color spectrum. Thicker walls cause interference at longer wavelengths, resulting in shades leaning towards blue and green. However, as evaporation gradually thins out the film, it undergoes a breathtaking transformation. Reflected light begins to cancel out yellow, then green, followed by blue tones until only shades of blue, magenta, and golden yellow remain before eventually becoming too thin to sustain itself - leading to its inevitable pop. This photograph showcases not just a physical chemistry marvel but also highlights the intricate details within this swirling liquid masterpiece. The delicate nature of soap bubbles combined with their ability to create such psychedelic patterns makes them an enchanting subject for scientific exploration. Through this image captured by Dr Keith Wheeler from Science Photo Library, we can delve into the world where surface chemistry meets optics and physics - uncovering secrets hidden within these ephemeral spheres while being captivated by their ever-changing colors and shimmering allure.
