Soviet transpolar flight, July 1937

Soviet transpolar flight. Americans gathered around a Soviet ANT-25 single-engine monoplane on 15 July 1937, after it had flown non-stop from Moscow, USSR, to San Jacinto, California, USA, passing over the North Pole en route. The pilots were Mikhail Gromov, Andrei Yumashev and Sergei Danilin. The first transpolar flight had been made on 20 June 1937, but only reached Vancouver (in Washington State, USA). This flight (12-14 July) broke long-distance flying records, with the flight covering 11, 500kilometres and taking 62 hours 17 minutes. The plane landed in a cow field, and was later examined by a California fruit inspector fearful of Russian insect pests. The crews of both planes became celebrities in the USA and USSR

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in aviation history - the Soviet transpolar flight of July 1937. In this image, a group of curious Americans gather around a remarkable sight: the Soviet ANT-25 single-engine monoplane. This extraordinary aircraft had just completed an epic non-stop journey from Moscow, USSR to San Jacinto, California, USA, passing over the North Pole en route. The brave pilots behind this groundbreaking feat were Mikhail Gromov, Andrei Yumashev, and Sergei Danilin. Their previous attempt on June 20th had only reached Vancouver in Washington State but this time they shattered long-distance flying records by covering an astonishing 11,500 kilometers in just 62 hours and 17 minutes. As the plane touched down in a humble cow field, it attracted attention not only from aviation enthusiasts but also from a California fruit inspector concerned about potential Russian insect pests. The crews of both planes involved became instant celebrities both in the United States and the USSR. This photograph transports us back to that early era of exploration and technological advancement when pioneers like Gromov dared to push boundaries with their pioneering flights. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination while highlighting the significance of this historic achievement for both nations involved.
