Steam ring

Steam ring. Steam ring being blown from the Bocca Nuova vent of Mount Etna, Sicily. Steam rings are generated when a pulse of steam is ejected from a near-cylindrical volcanic vent. The steam in the centre of the pulse is propelled by thermal forces, whereas the steam at the edge of the ring suffers drag from the surrounding air. This results in an annular rotation, which in the correct initial conditions can become stable over a span of a few minutes. This is directly analogous to blowing smoke rings. Photographed in February 2000

Eruption Explosion Mount Etna Volcano Volcanology Bocca Nuova Mt Etna Smoke Ring

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a steam ring being blown from the Bocca Nuova vent of Mount Etna in Sicily. The image showcases the incredible phenomenon that occurs when a pulse of steam is ejected from a volcanic vent, forming a near-cylindrical shape. Steam rings are formed as thermal forces propel the steam at the center of the pulse, while drag from surrounding air affects the outer edges. This creates an annular rotation, similar to blowing smoke rings. Under specific initial conditions, these steam rings can maintain their stability for several minutes. The photograph was taken in February 2000 and offers us a glimpse into nature's extraordinary power and complexity. It serves as a reminder of both the explosive energy within our planet and its ability to create breathtaking spectacles. With its geological significance, this image highlights various aspects related to volcanology and eruption dynamics. It showcases Mount Etna's ongoing activity and provides valuable insights into understanding volcanic processes. Captured by Science Photo Library, this print not only fascinates but also educates viewers about Earth's natural wonders. Its visual appeal combined with scientific relevance makes it an ideal addition for enthusiasts interested in geology or those seeking inspiration from our planet's awe-inspiring landscapes.
