EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Stone Age carving from the Magdalenian culture. Crafted with intricate detail from reindeer antler, this exquisite piece depicts a bison turning its head, possibly in an attempt to soothe an insect bite. Discovered within the Abri de la Madeleine cave near Tursac in the Dordogne region of France, this artifact offers us a glimpse into the rich history of early modern humans. The Magdalenian people flourished in western Europe between 15,000 and 7,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic period. Renowned for their mastery of bone, antler, and ivory craftsmanship, they left behind a legacy of stunning archaeological finds like this one. Against a striking black background, this studio-shot image brings forth every delicate curve and line etched by ancient hands. The presence of this carved bison transports us back to a time when wildlife roamed freely across European landscapes. Preserved within museums as part of our shared heritage, these stone age carvings serve as tangible links to our past. They remind us that human creativity has always found expression through artistry and storytelling. As we marvel at this extraordinary artwork captured by Javier Trueba's lens for Science Photo Library, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also its significance in unraveling the mysteries of prehistoric times.
