Superconductor surface, STM

Superconductor surface. Coloured scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) of the surface of a bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (BSCCO) superconductor on an atomic scale. A superconductor is a material that will conduct electricity without resistance. BSCCO is a transition metal oxide and so can become superconducting at unusually high temperatures. Measurements taken from this micrograph are used to study the electronic states of the superconductor in the hope of explaining the novel characteristics of transition metal oxides. The research is being undertaken by Prof. Yazdani in the Princeton Nanoscale Microscopy Laboratory, Princeton University, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a superconductor surface on an atomic scale. The vibrant colors in this false-colored scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) highlight the mesmerizing details of a bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (BSCCO) superconductor. Superconductors possess the remarkable ability to conduct electricity without any resistance, making them highly sought after for various applications. The BSCCO material depicted here is a transition metal oxide that exhibits superconductivity at unusually high temperatures. Prof. Yazdani and his team at Princeton Nanoscale Microscopy Laboratory are conducting groundbreaking research using measurements obtained from this micrograph. Their aim is to unravel the unique characteristics of transition metal oxides and gain insights into correlated electron systems. Located in Princeton University, USA, this state-of-the-art laboratory serves as a hub for cutting-edge studies in quantum physics and nanoscale science. Professor Ali Yazdani leads these pioneering investigations, delving into electronic states within superconductors with hopes of unlocking their mysteries. As we delve into the depths of this image, we witness the convergence of artistry and scientific exploration. This photograph not only captures our imagination but also represents humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge in unraveling the secrets hidden within materials like copper oxide superconductors.
