Supernova 1987a explosion simulation

Supernova 1987a explosion (image 1 of 5). Computer simulation of a star exploding as Supernova 1987a 300 seconds after its core collapsed. Density increases from black through red and orange to white. A shock wave is expanding through the stars outer layers of hydrogen. Metals (white) from the core are being expelled rapidly, with turbulence occurring as they collide with gases in the stars interior. Supernova 1987a was the explosive death of the blue supergiant star Sanduleak -69 202. Work done at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany. Cosmology Density Explosion Simulation Star Death Stellar Supernova Supernova 1987a

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer simulation of the explosive event known as Supernova 1987a. The image captures the supernova explosion just 300 seconds after the collapse of its core, resulting in a stunning display of colors and density variations. Starting from black, the density increases gradually through red and orange until it reaches white. The simulation reveals a shock wave expanding through the outer layers of hydrogen surrounding the star. Additionally, turbulent collisions occur between rapidly expelled metals from the core and gases within the star's interior, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. Supernova 1987a marked the demise of Sanduleak -69 202, a blue supergiant star that met its fiery end in this cataclysmic event. This remarkable simulation was conducted at Germany's prestigious Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics. As we delve into this mesmerizing visual representation, we gain insight into various aspects of cosmology and stellar phenomena. It serves as a reminder that even in death, stars can produce breathtaking displays that captivate our imagination and deepen our understanding of our vast universe. This extraordinary print is part of Science Photo Library's collection dedicated to science, astronomy, and simulations like this one – shedding light on celestial events such as supernovae while showcasing their beauty and complexity without any commercial intentions.
